Demand Management Case Study: Grid Energy Storage System

AusNet Services has published a case study profiling the Grid Energy Storage System (GESS) trial to explore the potential of using a large battery storage system to manage network peak demand and defer network upgrades. The GESS system is a large (1MW) battery system and smart inverter initially supporting the peak load at Watsonia, Victoria. The system will provide netwrok support by supplying power locally during peak demand times and recharging during low demand periods. The project commissioning is scheduled to occur in October 2014 followed by a two years trial period. It is expected that the GESS will be available for the summer 14-15 period.
